4+ year durability in a highly corrosive environment: why we selected a phenolic coating to protect a methanol reboiler
Si 14 E
When a major chemical operator needed long-term protection for a methanol reboiler with a U-tube bundle, it turned to the proven performance of SÄKAPHEN. 4 years later, the results speak for themselves: outstanding condition, zero coating failures, and continued reliable performance in an extremely aggressive environment.
The heat exchanger industry requires coating and lining products that prevent fouling, incrustation, and corrosion and stand the test of time, ensuring maximum long-term performance without compromising cost effectiveness.
This case study illustrates why a heat-curedphenolic coating often proves the ideal fit for these requirements.
The initial situation: a methanol reboiler requiring long-term protection
A few years ago, a major chemical operator needed long-term protection for a methanol reboiler with a U-tube bundle, a special type of heat exchanger operating under some of the harshest conditions in the process industry, where solvents, temperature fluctuations, acidic condensates, and fouling pose a serious risk of corrosion.
Project specifications:
- Client: international energy producer operating in North America, Europe, and Australia
- Operating conditions: produced water/methanol with a chloride content of 13,000 ppm operating at 113 °C
- Scope of work: preparing and coating external surfaces of tubes, baffles, and supports.
The client immediately decided to turn to Lithgow Saekaphen, part of the KUE Group, one of our longest-standing authorized applicators. Commercial Director Gary Kerr explained: “With the support of SÄKAPHEN, we selected Si 14 E, a high-performance, heat-resistant phenolic coating engineered to deliver:
- excellent chemicalresistance to methanol and solvent attack
- high thermal stability
- protection against under-deposit corrosion
- long-term asset life extension.
The result was a perfect, uniform finish designed to last.”
The coating process
Indeed, Lithgow Saekaphen completed the project in June 2022, following a proven coating process that included the following phases:
- high-precision surface preparation: jet washing with a degreasing agent followed by grit blasting to Sa 3 in accordance with ISO 8501-1:2007, with an average surface profile of 40 to 60 microns
- controlled application to SÄKAPHEN standards (at a nominal DFT of 200 microns): lining applied from solution in a series of thin layers (25-40 microns each), with an air-dry period between coats and intermediate low-temperature curing phases
- thermal curing for maximum chemical resistance: final curing phase at 210 °C
- certified inspection for full quality assurance.
Fast forward 4+ years: still going strong
Recently, the bundle was removed for routine inspection. As expected in its harsh environment, operational deposits and, above all, extreme fouling were evident on its surface. However, the coating beneath those deposits had remained intact. No blistering, no delamination, no corrosion.
This is a clear testament to the durability of SÄKAPHEN’s Si 14 E.
In other words, after more than 4 years of continuous methanol service, our coating system has ensured:
- zero coating failures
- extended maintenance intervals
- significant reduction in corrosion risk
- enhanced operational reliability
- lower lifecycle cost compared to uncoated or poorly coated equipment.
As Gary Kerr stated, “This methanol reboiler project is just one of many examples in which Lithgow Saekaphen and SÄKAPHEN have helped clients increase uptime, extend asset life, and reduce long-term maintenance costs. Our customers trust us because we deliver ISO 9001 certified coating expertise, strict process control, and compliance with any manufacturer’s specifications. This is why choosing the right coating with the right applicator is essential.”
